Reset CorelDRAW to factory settings
This first solutions is quite a simple process to perform. Users are required to open the application, press and hold the F8 key and then start a new drawing page. The application should prompt the user asking if he wishes to reset CorelDRAW to factory default. Press 'YES'.
When the process completes, the software will be as new. Depending on the CorelDRAW version installed, this solution may not be available in the suite. It has been confirmed to work on CorelDRAW x5.
Rename the .DTA file
As various users report, there is an important .DTA file used by CorelDRAW which gets corrupted and needs to be renamed. The procedure isn't pretty and it may have to be applied each time the user opens the application. Here are the steps:
- Open Windows Explorer.
- Navigate to C:UsersAll UsersCorelCorelDRAW Graphics Suite
- Please note that the last item of the path above may vary depending on the CorelDRAW version used. For example, if you have CorelDRAW x8 installed, the path will be 'C:UsersAll UsersCorelCorelDRAW Graphics Suite X8'
- In this folder a file name DR18s.dta will be present. Rename this file to something else, such as 'new_DR18s.dta.new'. This should be sufficient for the system to ignore its presence.
- Open CorelDRAW and login inside the application. The application should start properly.
- Close the application and revert the file name back to its original state.
- CorelDRAW should continue working as designed.
When renaming the file some users may receive a warning, stating that this might cause instability issues. Please ignore the prompt and continue.
Also, depending on the version, the file may instead be found under C:ProgramDataCorelCorelDraw Graphics Suite.
Note: This solutions has been confirmed to be working on CorelDRAW X8 and 2017 (CGS2017), only that in the last version the file name should be DR19s.DTA. The numbering convention at the very end is strictly related to the versioning of the product.
Refresh the Corel folder
In the same fashion as advised above, the user could also rename the entire Corel folder, found in the AppData folder. As this element is usually hidden in Windows, here's how to find it and fix it:

At this point, if the application runs properly, you can delete the old folder from the system as a new one has just been created.
Check the drawing elements
Those having issues with CorelDRAW when opening a single file should note that sometimes a single graphic element can cause the following issue:
CorelDRAW has stopped working. a program caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
This was quite an issue back with CorelDRAW X5, a very long time ago, and can still be found in the wild. In theory, an element of the artwork is causing the program to crash. Here are some suggestions on how to identify the troublesome element and fix it:
- The drawing suite always creates a backup file of any drawing. Find the backup in cause and save it again with a different name, using the .cdr extension.
- Another thing to do with the backup is to export it as a .cmx file, open a new file and import the .cmx into it. Afterwards, save it using a new filename.
- Although quite difficult, another idea would be to manually remove every grouped effect or transformation applied to objects.
Repair CorelDRAW using the installation kit
Run the installation executable again, usually found on the CorelDRAW DVD you just bought (or from the downloaded installation package). The software will detect that a version is already present on the computer and then will prompt with a menu, asking the user if he wishes to modify, repair or remove the current installation. Choose the 'Repair' option.
In theory, this solution should verify all the files currently found in the installation folder and add those that may have gone missing. Alternately, all corrupted files should be fixed with this step as well.
Update Microsoft Windows
One possibility that we're taking into consideration here is that CorelDRAW may have stopped working due to a compatibility issue with a Windows file. On the other hand, CorelDRAW relies on the .NET framework to function so the latest version should be always provided. No matter on the version installed, Windows 10, 8, or 7, make sure that all updates have been received by the computer.
To check for updates, Windows 8 and 10 users should press on the Windows key and type 'updates' in the search box. On the menu showcased, press on the 'Check for Updates' button and see if there's anything new available. As a good practice, setting up automatic updates is also of importance for Windows 8 and 7 users.
Those using Windows 7 should check for Updates right from the Control Panel menu.
Reinstall CorelDRAW
Usually, the most simple but dramatic of solutions fixes the problem. As the title simply suggests, the user should manually uninstall CorelDRAW, restart the PC and the run the installation kit again. Hopefully this time the product will be installed correctly and without errors.
